Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah President Cup squad signed off the preliminary rounds on Thursday with a bang after defeating Terengganu T-Team 2-0 away from home.
The heroes for the team were substitute Jetko Romedius and Leopold Alfonso as their winning goals helped the team to top Group A with 55 points.
Jetko broke the deadlock first in the 80th minute courtesy of a cross from Sabri Sahar, which he made no mistake to slot home with a first timer.
Leopold followed suit with a powerful grounder from 18 yards five minutes later.
According to assistant coach Matasan Ahmad, it was not an easy win as the team were under a lot of pressure earlier on.
"The first half was controlled by the home team. We were unable to mount any serious threat as they played very well indeed."
"Luckily for us, our back four led by captain Didie Rizal and keeper Andrea S. Tipay played brilliantly to deny them any opening especially in the first half."
He said the team were able to change the pattern of the game in the second half after the introduction of Maxsius Musa at the restart to replace Muhammad Mohd Safa.
He added that midfielder Adiafandi Dullah also had a golden chance to put the team ahead before he was substituted by Jetko in the second half when he shot sky high in a one on one situation.
The veteran coach said he and head coach Johnny Dominicus were very happy with the players' input in the game and hope they will continue and carry their winning performance into the next round.
Their next round and quarterfinal opponent will be Terengganu state team who finished in fourth place in Group B.
According to Matasan, the team may have to stay back in Terengganu as the match will be played on Monday (May 28) and they were still in discussion with Sabah FA officials to make an arrangement to remain in the east coast for the match instead of travelling back to Kota Kinabalu.
