Double mission for Justin

KOTA KINABALU: Justin Ganai is looking beyond just the President’s Cup challenge 2013 in naming the State Under-21 squad for the new season.

But the veteran State coach also takes into consideration their preparations for the Malaysia Games 2014 as he makes known the Sabah FA’s intention of wanting to repeat their historical feat of winning the gold medal at this year’s Sukma in Pahang.

Justin admitted that it has not been an easy decision in naming the squad.

“It has been a difficult two days in picking the best players for the squad. They are all good, and with almost the same quality.

“For next season, we want to try to go for the title, but then again, the FA also wants to try to defend the gold medal the team won this year.

“With that in mind, we need to look beyond next season, and must start preparing the team for Sukma 2014,” said Justin, when met at the last day of the two-day final selection trials at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas yesterday.

Former coach Awang Sabtu Jamil, who guided Sabah to their first President’s Cup crown in the late 90s, Burhan Ajui, Matasan Ahmad and former goalkeeper coach Jasri were among those seen at the selection trials.

At the end of the selection trials, Justin announced the names of 31 players, including 11 from this year’s squad for the new season.

However, only 25 will make the final squad.

“I’ll try to accommodate all the 31. Even though there are only 25 slots, but I will try to present my case to the FA and let those who do not make the 25 to be part of the team for the future.

These 31 players, Justin said will undergo a medical today before returning home.

They would report back for the pre-season training on the second week of December with Dec 10 as the tentative date.

Justin went on to say that out of the 11 players from this year’s squad, five of them, Sabri Sahar, Dendy Lowa, Didie Arizal Ibrahim, Endre S Tipay, Zul Mansshah Aling, are training with the senior side.

In fact six of them are with the seniors, however, Maxsius Musa, is believed to have been roped in by the Harimau Muda B.

Traore wows selectors

Kota Kinabalu: Malian striker Koh Traore looked impressive as he showed his prowess during the finishing practice conducted by David McCreery at the Intan Campus on Tuesday afternoon.

He managed to wow the spectators with a glimpse of brilliance in his control of the ball as well as neat finishing with both his feet and head despite lack of match fitness due to the off-season.

The 22-year-old whom the Sabah Football Association has been waiting for finally arrived at the State capital for his much-awaited trial with the State M-League team on Monday morning.

The 1.83m stocky player was supposed to arrive more than a week ago but due to technical factors he was only able to fly in from Burkina Faso on Sunday.

He joined up with the Sabah squad at the Intan Campus on Monday afternoon but only did some light jog around the field.

He told Express Sports that he was just too tired after the long flight from the West African country and only managed to arrive at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 1am.

He said he last played for Algerian League One club, Entente Sportive SŽtif in the just concluded season.

Based on the performance on Tuesday, he is most likely to get the nod from the coaches among the several other imports that came for the trial so far if he manages to shine again in a real match play condition in the coming days.

Keputusan penuh perlawanan Malaysia vs Singapore Piala Suzuki AFF 2012 25/11/12

Keputusan Penuh:

MALAYSIA (0)

vs

SINGAPORE (3)
Shahril Ishak 31', 37'
Alexsandar Duric 75'

Sabah FA dedah senarai pemain tempatan

Senarai pemain hampir lengkap

Cebagoo FC to hold selection trials Nov 19

FAM debutant...Cebagoo FC
KOTA KINABALU: FAM Cup bound Cebagoo FC will be holding selection trials for Under-21 players.

The one-day trials on November 19 will be held at the Sabah Foundation field from 4pm.

Its President Mohd Joh Hj Wid said for the new season, teams in the FAM Cup are required to register at least 10 Under-21 players (born in 1991).

“At the moment, we still need several slots left for these players (Under-21) in order to comply with the competition regulations.

“We are calling on State players, especially from the Under-19 squad, who failed to make it into the State President’s Cup team to attend trials with us.

“Those who have represented their schools or universities are also encouraged to come,” said Joh.

Joh said Sabah’s young talent should be exposed to this level of competition.

He also revealed that the club is in the final phase of preparations before submitting their full squad to the FA of Malaysia.

“Hopefully, all the sponsorship dealings will go on as planned, in order for us to see action in the FAM Cup.

Once everything is finalised, including registration, Joh said they will make an official announcement on the full list of the team.

Who will replace Khairul?

Kota Kinabalu: Khairul Azman Mohd impending departure from the state team has opened the door for a new goalkeeper coach next season.

The former international has recently announced his intention to join Johor next season as their goalkeeper coach although he has yet to sign any paper with his new employer.

If he does leave, the Sabah FA will have to take extra precaution in naming the new coach as it is a very important position for the team who are vying for an immediate return to the Super League.

Last season, the team had let in a total of 52 league goals no thanks to some sloppy goalkeeping which prompted the management to engage the service of veteran coach Awal Taham to give extra coaching to the three goalies towards the end of the season.

The 60-year-old who is the most experienced as well as innovative in his coaching method with goalkeepers is not likely to take up the post as he is more inclined to coach young goalkeepers nowadays.

Sabah reserve team keeper Andre S Tipay who pulled out a string of breathtaking saves to help Sabah to win the Sukma Gold medal in July was one of the products from his hard work.

The favourites to take over the vacant post are likely to be Awal's two former students, ex-national and state goalkeeper Mark Damun Joseph Sagar and Jasrih Jabirin @Jerry.

The former has just returned from Teluk Intan, Perak where he spent the last six months employed by FAM as the Malaysian women team goalkeeper coach for the newly assembled team under Jacob Joseph.

The Kota Kinabalu City Hall employee is understood to be out of contract at the moment as the team is currently taking a break until next year.

Jerry on the other hand is definitely more experienced having passed the exam earlier and he was also the coach for the state premier league team three seasons ago before Khairul took over his place.

But who ever is chosen by the FA, they must do it fast as the pre-season training for the team will start next Monday even though the two new goalies will probably be arrived only at the end of the month.

Senarai pemain Sabah 2013 (bukan rasmi)

Senarai pemain Sabah musim 2013

Pitch hampers selection process

Kota Kinabalu: Poor pitch condition was the main concern for coach David McCreery as the deadline for finalising the State M-League team nears.

With the Sabah Football Association set to announce the players to play for the State by Friday including the imports , the appalling pitch at the Likas Sports Complex 'B" field due to the heavy weather had hampered the task of finalising the list of players handled by David and his assistants Andrew Majanggim and Johnny Dominicus.

The team was unable to use the main stadium which is temporarily closed for renovation until the end of the year so is the Penampang Stadium in preparation for the Sabah Games to be held here next year.

The trial on Monday morning saw all the players having a tough time to showcase their abilities under the soggy condition and David was sympathetic with them.

"It was just difficult for everybody with the current pitch condition and it was also unfair for the players as under such circumstances, no one will be able to produce their best."

He said there will be two more sessions to be held at the same pitch today and tomorrow unless they are allowed to play at the UMS Stadium.

Meanwhile, four foreign import strikers are here trying their luck with the team.

The first to arrive was the product of EPL's West Ham United Academy Ibrahima Sow, a French Senegalese followed by Moroccan Zakaria Saylane, Senegalese Pape Leter and Fokim Fonda from Cameroon who was the last to arrive on Sunday night.

Two more are believed to be on the way here with one from Sudan and the other from Ivory Coast.

A Peninsula based striker who played in a Super League team last season was one of the few who managed to make their mark during the trial here together with former State player Hardy Charles Parsi who last played for ATM in the 2011 season.

The only Peninsula player that the FA had confirmed signed so far was T-Team striker Khairul Izuan Khalid who played with his new teammates on Monday and the FA Vice President ll Datuk Yusof Kassim was also present during the session talking to the coaches.

Khairul: I’m leaving … with a heavy heart

12th November, 2012

KOTA KINABALU: Long-serving Khairul Azman Mohd has decided to leave Sabah for greener pastures.

The lanky, former national goalkeeper is all set to join Super League side Johor on an undisclosed two-year contract as their goalkeeper coach.

He will reunite with his former team-mate Fandi Ahmad, who is the team’s head coach-cum-manager.

The two played together for Pahang in 1991 and 1992 and it was in 1992 that the duo won four trophies with Pahang.

Besides winning the Premier League crown and the Malaysia Cup, the team also won the Fair Play and Charity Shield.

Khairul, whose contract with the Sabah FA runs out end of this month, left for the Southern State yesterday to finalise the deal.

“Everything has been verbally agreed by both parties. It is only a matter of putting pen to paper,” said Khairul when contacted yesterday.

Khairul, who is married to a local Sabahan and has a five-year-old son, said he leaves Sabah with a heavy heart.

“I’m leaving the Sabah team with a heavy heart. The main reason why I decided to go is because I want to gain new experience, and it has nothing to do with a good offer.

“I will come back to Sabah one day, if there is any opportunity I will be back with the Sabah team as well and will share the experience I have gained with the Sabah players,” the 44-year-old former State skipper said.

Khairul also thanked the Sabah FA, especially its President Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, deputy president Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, Secretary General Alijus Hj Sipil as well as former Treasurer Hj Shahriman Abdullah for giving him the chance to be part of the team for the last two seasons.

“I would also like to say thank you to the previous management such as Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (former President), and his committee members for the memorable success the team achieved while under their leadership.

Khairul, who now holds the FA of Malaysia License C certificate and had just attended the License B course, signed for Sabah in 1995.

During his stay with Sabah, he helped guide the team to the FA Cup crown in 1995 and the Premier League (now known as the Super League) the following year.

After almost a decade donning Sabah colours making a total of 249 caps, Khairul called it a day at the end of the 2005 season, no thanks to his knee problem, and joined the team as a goalkeeper coach in 2006.

He was the team’s goalkeeper coach until 2008. He left the team the end of 2008 before making a return in 2011.

Prior to signing for Sabah, Khairul, who once won the Asia’s Best Goalkeeper Award, made 59 capped for Malaysia.

He started his football career with his State team Pahang in 1985 at the age of 17.

He made his national debut in 1991, played for the country until 1997.

Sabah FA hopes to finalise foreign imports soon

9th November, 2012
KOTA KINABALU: At least four foreign players are expected to be on trials with the State squad starting this weekend as the Sabah FA hopes to complete their two-foreign players’ quota signing before they begin their pre-season training for the 2013 challenge.

They are now close to tying up Welsh defender, Rhys David Weston, who once skippered Scottish side Dundee FC, and are looking for their second signing, preferably a striker.

“At least four players (foreign) will attend trials with the team this weekend,” the FA Secretary General Alijus Hj Sipil confirmed yesterday.

“Those named currently on our list are all offensive players,” he added.

The foursome, Alijus revealed are Koh Traore and Sow Ibrahim, both African, Herby Fortunat from the Carribean and Morocco’s Zakaria Salyane.

“We hope that at least one of them could meet our requirements, otherwise we will bring in more for trials,” said Alijus.

On the foursome, Alijus said that they do not know much about them, adding that based on their records, they seemed to be good.

“However, we will not pick players based on their resume, and that is the very reason why we are bringing them in and would put them to the test before any deal is done.”

Sabah, who is under the watchful eyes of David McCreery, will be plying their trade in the Premier League next season after being demoted from the Super League this year.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA will be holding a three-day open selection trials at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex field B from Nov 9 to 11, 2012.

Alijus Hj Sipil said this will be the final venue for them to unearth hidden talents before they finalise their squad for the 2013 season.

The FA Secretary-General added that a few foreign players are also expected to attend the trials.

“Our priority is to look for another foreign player (preferably a striker) to fill in one of the two slots for import players.

“One of the slots for foreign imports will almost certainly go to a defender. This potential candidate has been training with the team since attending earlier trials, last month,” said Alijus obviously referring to a former Arsenal academy graduate Rhys Weston, who was here on trial for almost two weeks before heading home.

“As for the local players, the list is almost finalised, and there are only a few slots left for local imports, which is still left vacant,” said Alijus via SMS yesterday.

He said that the FA will announce its final squad on November 15, which will be followed by a contract-signing ceremony a few days later, after which the team will begin intensive pre-season training.

In a related development, Alijus also revealed that they are also on the verge of finalising its President’s Cup (Under-21) and Youth (Under-19) squads.

He said the ongoing state-wide roadshow that began in September (2012) will end at the Sukma field on November 10 and 11.

Rhys to don Sabah colours

GL Oh
Kota Kinabalu: Former Dundee captain Rhys David Weston is the first foreign import confirmed to play for the Sabah Premier League team next season.

The Welsh international flew in from London via Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday night and was received by coach David McCreery, Johnny Dominicus and Sabah Football Association official Amsir Abdullah at Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

Sabah FA Secretary General Alijus Sipil has confirmed to Express Sports on Wednesday that the central defender will be offered a one year contract.

Rhys came early last month for a one week trial here and his undoubted skills with both feet as well as his commanding display on the field had won praises from both fellow players and coaches alike.

He said earlier that he was first informed by an agent on the possibility of playing here after quitting Dundee whom he helped guide to a second place finish in the Scottish first division last season.

He admitted that he had never heard of Sabah before but decided to take the chance and was genuinely impressed with the place and people here and was willing to offer his service for the team next season as he felt that it is a very good opportunity for him to try something new in this part of the world after more than 400 games as a professional.

Another import from Ivory Coast who is said to be a top striker is also on his way here early next week.

Alijus added that the team is still looking for players from other teams to beef up the squad and they have approached a few of the players but was unable to reveal their names as yet because they are still under contract with their current employer.

As for the local front, unless there is a big surprise in the selection trial this weekend then it is almost a done deal with some of the currently players who have been training under David for the past few months are set to be named in the final squad.

Meanwhile, Alijus said the open trial for the State team is still on and they will be held at the Likas Complex B field starting at 8am from Nov 9-11.

The State FA will also be holding a trial to select players for the President Cup (Under-21) and the Youth team (Under-19) from Nov 10-11 at the Likas Sukma Field.

Alijus urged those who missed out on the chance to attend the previous trials which was held at several districts since September, to attend the session which will be conducted by Justin Ganai and Matasan Ahmad.

He also disclosed that 20 players have been shortlisted for the President Cup and 23 players for the Under-19 squad so far.

Rozaimi at the crossroads

2nd November, 2012

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah sensation – youngster Md Rozaimi Abd Rahman is at the crossroads.

The striker has received an unofficial offer from the Young Tigers A, who are playing in the S-League, but is undecided whether to take up the offer or stick with his beloved Sabahawks.

The former TABS Kota Kinabalu player signed a new contract only recently with his employer – the Sabah FA, which only ends after the 2014 season, and he hopes to see off the contract.

However, he fears that if he remains playing for Sabah, he may not be picked for next year’s SEA Games in Myanmar.

And that has given him a slight headache of whether to join the Young Tigers A or stay in Sabah.

“My heart says remain in Sabah but if I do that, I may not be considered for the SEA Games,” Rozaimi was quoted by a national daily as saying yesterday.

“National youth coach Ong Kim Swee made a verbal offer recently but I have not received anything official. I will wait for it before deciding.

“I, however, prefer to play for Sabah until 2014. I want to help them regain their Super League status next season. I also want to score as many goals for Sabah after netting only five in the just-concluded season.

Rozaimi, who was voted the season’s Most Promising Player at the FAM National Football Awards on Tuesday, became the hottest property in local football after making headlines in the AFC Under-22 qualifiers in Myanmar earlier this year.

He scored 10 goals for Malaysia.

The Kota Kinabalu lad, just 20 years old, also played an instrumental role in Sabah’s historic win in the Malaysia Games in Kuantan.

Rozaimi played on loan for Selangor during the Malaysia Cup campaign but he failed to steer the 32-time winners to victory in the competition.

“I did not play well at all for Selangor. As a striker, I was supposed to score goals but I only managed two.

Rozaimi, who hurt his hamstring in training with the national Under-21 squad recently, has now picked up a groin injury.

“I have been off tough training for the last two weeks. It is getting better. I am honoured to be part of the 33-member squad for the AFF Cup. However, I am only on the standby list at the moment.

Sarawak’s Ashri Chuchu, Terengganu’s Zubir Azmi, PKNS’ Azrif Nasrulhaq Badrul Hisham, Perak President’s Cup captain Nurridzuan Abu Hassan and D. Kenny Palraj have also been offered to join the Tigers.

After earning his first cap as a substitute in Malaysia’s 6-0 win over Sri Lanka in April, Rozaimi was in the national squad for the friendly matches against English Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester City last July before travelling to Austria for matches.
