Two goals hero...Rozaimi Abd. Rahman
PETALING JAYA: The national Under-22 team recorded their second win by beating Taiwan 4-2 in their Group G Asian Under-22 Championship qualifying campaign at the Aung San Stadium in Yangon yesterday.

Striker Rozaimi Abdul Rahman continued his fine scoring form by bagging a brace in the 7th and 40th minutes, taking his tally to six goals in two matches.

D. Saarvindran scored his second goal of the competition in the 73rd after Taiwan defender Chen Yen Jui struck an own goal in the 24th minute.

Taiwan got their goals through midfielder Lin Chang Lun in the 50th minute and skipper Wen Chih-Hao deep into injury time.

Coach Ong Kim Swee opted to rotate his squad by resting striker A. Thamil Arasu and bringing in the nippy Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim to partner Rozaimi in attack.

Kim Swee also tinkered with his backline by deploying Mohd Fandi Othman and Nazirul Naim as fullbacks and pairing Shahrul Saad with Mohd Fadhli Shas in central defence.

Kim Swee said the win had put his side on the right track for their qualification to the Finals next year.

“We played very well in the first half to race 3-0 ahead. But we got complacent in the second half and were punished,” said Kim Swee from Yangoon yesterday.

“We had our chances to score more goals and three attempts hit the post. But what’s important is we won.

“We now have to focus on our next game against Vietnam on Saturday.”

In other matches yesterday, favourites South Korea were held 0-0 by hosts Myanmar, while Vietnam trounced the Philippines 9-0.

Malaysia are third in the group, below Myanmar and leaders South Korea, with six points from three matches.

A total of 41 teams are competing in the qualifiers of the inaugural championship. The top two from each of the seven groups will be joined by the best overall third-placed team and the hosts in the Finals next year.
